Unapologetic Women

Can our social media presence exist without boundaries?

Episode Summary

In last week's episode, we discussed the positive impact social media can have in helping to lower the barriers of entry to the conversation and creating awareness of mental health. This week we discuss the damaging effects that social media can have on our mental health, and the need for boundaries online.

Episode Notes

From 2016 to 2021, we experienced a digital presence that amplified and normalised troll-like behaviour from a democratically elected world leader.  We discuss the impact and the role social media companies can and should have in restricting such content. As well as our roles as content creators and users.

In 2021, we are experiencing what it feels like to be online after Trump has been deplatformed. But we also know that this game of whack-a-mole is not a long-term viable solution. We close out this episode with an open-ended question. What is the solution to content moderation? Some suggestions include AI and stronger regulatory bodies but ultimately we need to bring all stakeholders to the table to ensure a safer online experience for all.
