Unapologetic Women

Can we have ageism without sexism?

Episode Summary

For women, ageism is a constant barrier within the workforce. What we unearthed in this conversation is that our lives are framed by time. When we isolate the issues that women in their early 20s face we are not able to separate the similarity between the issues faced by women in the workforce later in life. In this episode, we discuss the impact of ageism on women, the cultural norms around the inability to see women sexually past a certain age - drawing on the new release of ‘Just Like That’, the timeframe that women inherit to be successful in their careers yet also procreate. It is unequivocally true that women feel the ramifications of ageism more than men.

Episode Notes

If like us you were wondering what ageism is, we referred to the WHOs definition that identifies ageism intersects and exacerbates other forms of disadvantage including those related to sex, race and disability.

Ageism refers to the stereotypes (how we think),

prejudice (how we feel) and,

discrimination (how we act) towards others or oneself based on age.

Stay tuned this will be a three-part conversation to really dive into the correlations between ageism, sexism, and women in the workforce. Our last episode will include an expert on the topic.
